Traditional Matcha Tea

Traditional Matcha Tea

Matcha is a finely ground green tea powder known for its vibrant color, delicate flavor, and health benefits. Making traditional matcha is simple, but following the right steps ensures a smooth, frothy cup every time.

What You’ll Need

  • 2 g of matcha powder (approximately two “chashaku” scoops)

  • 60 ml of hot water

  • Whisk

  • Bowl

  • Sifter

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Sift the Matcha
Always sift the matcha powder through a fine sieve, even the most premium one. This helps remove clumps and ensures a smooth, creamy tea.

Step 2: Add Some Water
Pour 30 ml of hot water over the sifted powder. Make sure the water is between 60–70°C (140–160°F) to preserve the delicate flavor and avoid bitterness.

Step 3: Whisk the Matcha
Use a whisk to mix the powder and water in a motion shaped like the letter “M.” This helps dissolve the matcha completely and form a light froth.

Step 4: Add the Remaining Water
Pour in the remaining 30 ml of water and whisk gently until a fine foam appears on the surface.

Step 5: Enjoy!
Your traditional matcha is ready. Sip directly from the bowl and enjoy its rich, umami flavor.

Pro Tip: Even high-quality matcha should always be sifted, and keeping the water temperature moderate is key to a perfectly smooth and flavorful cup.
